In Lagos, 3rd Mainland Bridge is seen as a master bridge of which both
state and federal government don’t joke with, once anything happens to
the bridge or there is a closure, it affects the whole city.
August
24-28th 2018 will be days Lagosians will not forget in a hurry, these
are days the 3rd Mainland Bridge was shut for investigative repair
works. These days are hectic for road users where users are left to
battle the road with the trailers and tanker drivers.
During
these days, a lady discovered a crack at the Eko Bridge of which she
raised the alarm on her social media that Eko Bridge may be a danger to
all road users soon. This call went round the social media and got the
attention of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing of which Mr.
Babatunde Raji Fashola was the minister. In a tweet by the ministry,
they dispel all fears and promised that work will begin soon on the
bridge and in fairness, we got a clip where some engineers came to
inspect the bridge.
AutoReportNG was at Ijora Olopa earlier this
week and we decided to take the bridge and it came as a surprise that
the bridge remains the same, no repair, no touch, nothing was done on
the bridge despite cries and assurance from the ministry to quickly
repair the bridge. The bridge has been turned to a joint where the area
boys gathered to drink, smoke and collect their levies.
We did a
quick check of this bridge and we noticed that some parts have started
to peel off from their joints. This bridge is where the tanker drivers
have turned to her garage where they parked their tankers and trailers
and this same bridge links Ijora, Apapa, Oyingbo to Island so we can’t
decide to take the risks.
We appeal to the Federal Ministry of
Works and Housing to quickly as a matter of urgency repair those parts
that are peeling off as soon as possible. We have had an assurance that
there is no cause for alarm but the earlier we repair this portion, the
better.
