Seven  football fans have been killed in a horror head-on crash after their minivan smashed into an oncoming lorry in Romania while travelling to a Europa League match in France.

All of the victims supported the Greek side PAOK were on Tuesday travelling to France by road to watch their crucial Europa League clash with Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday before tragedy occured. 

Three other Greek fans are in hospital with serious conditions.

All 10 PAOK supporters were travelling through Romania in a black minivan when they tried to perform an overtake just after 1pm.

Terrifying dashcam footage from the vehicle being passed captures the moment the van veers into the opposite lane to attempt the maneuverer. A huge lorry then appears as it quickly comes towards the minivan unable to move with two other vehicles in the only other lane.

The fan driver attempts to swerve to avoid the collision, but only ends up in the direct path of the incoming multi-wheeler.

A huge smash sends the far smaller minivan across the road as debris gets strewn across both lanes.

Emergency officials rushed to the crash site on the E70 highway between the towns of Caransebes and Lugoj in western Romania.

Romania’s fire service said in a statement: “Around 1.05 p.m. we were called to respond to a traffic accident on the E70, near the village of Lugoj.

“A first aid vehicle, an extrication vehicle, a fire engine and personnel transport vehicles immediately dispatched to the scene.”

The head of the Romanian Civil Protection said air ambulances couldn’t reach the scene due to adverse weather conditions.

They later confirmed that seven men had d!ed and three were taken to hospital all aged between 28 and 30.

Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis paid a touching tribute to the victims.

He said: “Our thoughts are with the PAOK fans who lost their lives in Romania, on the way to their beloved team’s away game.

“My sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the tragic accident, and a speedy recovery to the injured.”

Investigations are ongoing into the fatal collision.
