8th NASS Should Pass Regulations On Tobacco Control Act – NTCA

Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) and Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), have called on 8th National Assembly to pass the draft of the National Tobacco Control Regulation as a legacy that would regulate the production and supply of tobacco in the country.

The programme coordinator of NTCA,
Oluseun Esan, led a rally to the NASS, yesterday, in Abuja, demanding
the approval of regulations for National Tobacco Control Act.

According
to Esan, the National Tobacco Control Act (NTCA) was a legacy left by
the 7th National Assembly and signed into law in 2015, by former
President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

“So, we are calling on the 8th National Assembly to leave a legacy of assenting to the National Tobacco Control Regulations Act.
“The Act had been submitted to the National Assembly for them to do the needful,” he said.

On
his part; the deputy executive director, Environmental Rights Action
and Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), Akinbode Oluwafemi, said,
“We are aware that the current session of the National Assembly will end
on June 6, thereby necessitating that the National Assembly needs to
approve the draft regulations within weeks.”

He called on the
leadership and members of the National Assembly to resist attempts by
tobacco corporations and their allies to water down the provisions of
the regulations and ensure its speedy passage.

He added that,
Nigerians would count this as a legacy achievement of the current
leadership and members of the National Assembly.
