According to his attorney Roza Etemad-Ansari, Toomaj Salehi, 32, was found guilty of “corruption on Earth” but was not sentenced to death.
He was detained as a result of protests that broke out following Mahsa Amini, a lady who was detained for reportedly donning a “improper” hijab, passing away while in detention.
The Iranian government has not responded.
The accusation of “insulting the Supreme Leader,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and “communicating with hostile governments” had been dropped against her client, according to Ms. Etemad-Ansari.
However, the charge of “corruption on Earth” is one of the most serious offenses in the nation and carries a potential death penalty. The Islamic Republic has always used this as one of its principal accusations against dissidents.
Following several months in solitary confinement in the Iranian jail of Dastgerd, Saleh was sentenced.
Following the passing of Mahsa Amini in September, the rapper was one of the tens of thousands of Iranians, largely young people, who demonstrated against the country’s clerical leadership. Additionally, he posted videos of his songs that supported the effort.Security forces have reportedly cracked down violently, killing hundreds of protesters and arresting thousands of others while portraying the turmoil as “riots” instigated by foreign agents. Human rights advocates claim this.
Additionally, seven protestors were put to death after what a UN expert called “arbitrary, summary, and sham trials marred by allegations of torture.” According to reports, many more people have received death sentences or capital offense charges.
Days before his detention, Salehi remarked in an interview with CBC News that it was “hard, because you have to post videos that are critical of the regime.”
