Gabriel Ogbonnaya, a man accused of defiling a seven-year-old girl, was placed under detention at the Nigerian Correctional Service by the Ikeja Sexual Offense and Domestic Violence Court on Thursday.
Ogbonnaya was remanded by Justice Abiola Soladoye following his plea.
The Lagos State Government has presented two counts of criminal sexual assault and defilement of a minor against the defendant.
Olusola Soneye, the state prosecutor, informed the court during the defendant’s arraignment that the offenses were committed between February 2022 and February 2023.
Soneye testified in court that the two incidences happened at No. 2 Abose Street in Lagos State’s Amuwo Odofin neighborhood.
He claimed that by unlawfully caressing the victim’s vagina with his hands, the defendant sexually assaulted her.
Additionally, the prosecution informed the court that the defendant defiled the victim by inserting his penis into her vagina.
Soneye claims that the offenses were against Sections 263 and 137 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law.
The accused, however, entered a not guilty plea to the accusations that were presented against him.
Judge Soladoye ruled that the defendant would be held in a correctional facility until he filed an application for bail after the defendant entered a not-guilty plea.
The case was postponed until January 17, 2023, when the trial was scheduled to begin.
