ADVICE:- How Healthy Are You By:- Okwori Jacob Enenche (Must Read)
Good Day everyone.
I saw something in the hospital today, and I was compelled to make this post. I will just ask us a few questions:
Have you ever measured your blood pressure before? If yes, how long ago? Was it in the last few months?
REASON: I met a certain Mr X, who came down with what is called a “Hypertensive emergency”. He had a long standing hypertension which was not properly controlled, and he only came to the hospital when he had this throbbing headache. Prior to that, he had noticed progressive leg swelling and had difficulty sleeping well at night (still he didn’t come to the hospital because he was sure it was a spiritual attack). He also noticed that he couldn’t walk for as long as he used to before (still he didn’t come to the hospital because be felt it was the stress of the spiritual attacks he normally had at night that left him fatigued during the day). It wasn’t until he started having the throbbing and incapacitating headaches few days ago that he came to the hospital. Here is a summary of the amazing discoveries that were made:
1. At presentation, his Blood pressure was measured by the medical team on call. Guess what? It measured 230/150 mmHg (normal value should dance around 120/80mmHg, and a value of equal to or greater than 140/90mmHg is already considered HYPERTENSION).
2. He was first diagnosed of having hypertension 12 years ago (then he was a young man of 26 years and was about going for youth service), but he didn’t take it seriously.
3. He also had a wonderful history of significant alcohol consumption: He was proudly ” a social young man” who consumes on the average 15 bottles of beer weekly for the past 10 years.
4. He had also noticed blurring of his vision over the past 2 months. He however felt it was due to so much stress.
5. I already spoke of the leg swelling, what I didn’t mention was that at the time he presented the swelling was at the level of his groin.
Well, to cut the long story short, the doctor made and diagnosis of a “Hypertensive emergency complicated by a Hypertensive retinopathy, Hypertensive heart disease, Chronic Kidney disease, and ?Liver Cirrhosis”. I couldn’t help but ask: “Why will someone choose to do this to himself?”
Please friends, visit a doctor TODAY (not tomorrow), and get to know what your blood pressure is. Early diagnosis and commencement of treatment for HYPERTENSION could save you plenty of troubles in the nearest future. The fact that the name is common doesn’t reduce the severity of its complications.
Sincerely Yours,
Okwori, Jacob Enenche.
