Argentina thought it had equalized in the dying seconds of its Olympic opener against Morocco on Wednesday, only for the goal to be ruled out amid a pitch invasion that delayed the final three minutes for nearly two hours.
Argentina coach Javier Mascherano labeled the chaotic scenes as “the biggest circus I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The chaos erupted in added time when Argentina’s Cristian Medina headed in a 106th-minute goal, seemingly tying the game at 2-2 and sparking celebrations among players and fans.
Soufiane Rahimi scored twice for Morocco, giving them a 2-0 lead at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard before Argentina’s Giuliano Simeone pulled one back in the 68th minute.
