Starting this week, soccer enthusiasts will have the opportunity to purchase the Nike jersey worn by Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, more than six months after she sported the purple top at the Women’s World Cup.
According to a statement by the governing body Football Australia on Monday, the jersey will be accessible for purchase via their online store from Tuesday, with availability expanding to retailers starting Wednesday.
Arnold notably maintained a tournament-leading tally of four clean sheets as she played a pivotal role in the Matildas’ journey to the semifinals of last year’s Women’s World Cup, jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
During the country’s quarterfinal triumph against France, the 30-year-old goalkeeper made a remarkable contribution by saving three penalties in the shootout, propelling Australia to the semifinals for the first time in history.
The sale of goalkeeper jerseys has stirred controversy in women’s soccer, particularly after Nike opted not to make the uniform widely available during last year’s World Cup.
This decision spurred England goalkeeper Mary Earps to launch a vigorous campaign urging the sportswear company to release the women’s goalkeeper jerseys prior to the tournament.
