In the brief video posted to Twitter, Paul Okpokam, a Nigerian immigrant who struggles with prejudice and multiple romantic relationships, is shown touring San Francisco in the United States.
Okpokam describes the difficulties in attempting to flee, citing the turmoil in the US after the murders of Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy, as well as the ongoing Biafra Civil War in Nigeria.
It’s evident from the trailer that Bushman is an emotional trip. The black-and-white film, according to writer Tom Shales of the Washington Post, is “perceptive and compassionate.” Moreover, the Los Angeles Times’ Charles Champlin referred to it as “a remarkably sensitive study of a man caught between cultures.”
The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) will host the US premiere of this brand-new 4K restoration on February 2, 2024. It will first be screened at The Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) film preservation event the following week, on January 15, 2023.
