Iran war: Trump promises military protection for ships transiting Strait of Hormuz

US Leader, Donald Trump has pledged to safeguard global energy shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions in the Middle East and threats to maritime trade.

Speaking during the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC, Trump later took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to outline his administration’s position.

“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible,” he wrote on Tuesday.

“No matter what, the United States will ensure the FREE FLOW of ENERGY to the WORLD.”

As part of the broader response, Trump directed the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide risk insurance and financial guarantees for maritime trade operating in the region. While the move is largely focused on protecting energy cargoes, officials indicated that the support would also extend to other commercial shipping firms navigating the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is widely regarded as one of the most strategically vital shipping corridors in the world. It serves as the sole maritime gateway connecting the Persian Gulf to international waters, making it critical for global oil and gas supplies.

Major energy producers along the Gulf include Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.

Escalating conflict and reported threats from Iran to target passing vessels have unsettled global energy markets. As a result, oil and gas prices have surged sharply, reflecting fears of potential disruptions to one of the world’s busiest and most important trade routes.
