Lionel Messi Wins His 6th European Golden Boot
Lionel Messi has won the European Golden Shoe for a sixth time after Kylian Mbappe failed to hunt him down on Friday night.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker had one game to catch Messi but he was always likely to come up short given he needed four goals to move level and five to usurp the Barcelona star.
In the end, Mbappe scored one to take his tally to 33 as PSG lost 2-1 to Stade Reims, leaving Messi to win the award for the third successive year with 36 goals.
Messi’s first Golden Shoe arrived in 2010 when Pep Guardiola was on the bench. He scored 34 goals. In 2012 he won it again, this time with a staggering 50 goals.
Messi still had more to give and in 2013 when the award with 46 goals in the only season he played under Tito Vilanova, despite some injury problems.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez shared the prize out between 2014 and 2016, but Messi has returned with a bang to win it in 2017, 2018 and now 2019.
In Luis Enrique’s final season he reached 37 goals, last season he won it with 34 strikes and this year he beats Mbappe with 36 goals.
