With a 1-0 victory over 2019 champions Algeria, Mauritania produced yet another stunning outcome at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals, securing a historic spot in the last-16 at the Stade de la Paix on Tuesday.
After losing similarly to Algeria in 2021, Mauritania had never led or even won a game in their previous eight continental finals encounters. However, Yali Dellahi’s goal in the first half of the match was enough to
send Algeria packing and cause coach Djamel Belmadis’ team to quit the competition humiliatingly twice in a row.
