In Nasarawa State, two executive bills have passed their first reading in the House of Assembly. The first bill is “A Bill For a Law to Amend the Nasarawa State College of Nursing and Midwifery Law, 2021 and other Matters Connected Therewith,” while the second bill is “A Bill For a Law to Amend the Number of Judges of the Superior Courts of Record Law 2001 and for Related Matters”.

The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, announced the passage of both bills during the House proceedings in Lafia on Tuesday.
The bills were moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon Umar Tanko Tunga, and seconded by Hon Abel Bala, the Minority Leader of the House.
The Speaker has set May 3rd, 2023 for the second reading of both bills. This will allow for the House to deliberate further on the proposed amendments to the Nasarawa State College of Nursing and Midwifery Law, as well as the Number of Judges of the Superior Courts of Record Law.
In addition to the two executive bills, the House also received a report from the House Standing Committee of Judiciary, Ethics and Privileges on a Bill For a Law to Amend the Nasarawa State Area Courts Law 2022 and For Other Matters Related Therewith.
Hon Mohammed Ibrahim Alkali, the Vice Chairman of the Committee, presented the report at the floor of the House. The Speaker announced that the report will be deliberated on May 3rd, 2023.
This move by the House of Assembly to pass these bills into first reading and receive the report on the proposed amendments to the Area Courts Law shows the commitment of the lawmakers to improving the legal system in the state.
The second reading of these bills will be eagerly anticipated by stakeholders in the state, he added.
