Okowa Confirms Death Of Third Person In Delta, Describes Incident As Unfortunate

The Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has confirmed the death of a third person in Udu Local Government Area of the state.

The
governor described the incident as unfortunate, calling on security
agencies to beef up security ahead of the governorship and state
assembly elections.

Governor Okowa blamed the electoral
violence which led to the death of the victims on the opposition party,
accusing them of hiring thugs to disrupt the voting process.

He said, “It is the other party that got involved in thuggery in the few places that we had (violence).

“This
particular place in Sapele, the report was that two boys came out of a
house and shot two boys trying to vote and ran back into the house, by
the time we were able to get security men into the house, the boys had
run away through the river”.

The governor noted that the violence in the Sapele area of the state was not an issue of ballot snatching.

“Some thugs were coming to disrupt the process of counting of the
elections and this boy just came and said no you can not disrupt and
that was how they used a cutlass on him, it was a very unfortunate
incident”.

He stressed that his party was not involved in any violence.

Meanwhile, the
state police command has earlier confirmed the death of two people at a
polling unit in Amukpe Sapele LGA of the state on Saturday.

According
to the police, unknown gunmen stormed the polling units when the voting
was still ongoing and sprayed bullets on voters leaving two persons
dead while one other was injured and is currently receiving treatment at
a nearby hospital.
