“Sachet alcohol is responsible for banditry, road accidents, and suicides” – NAFDAC DG

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has warned that excessive alcohol consumption is contributing to banditry, road accidents, and youth suicides in Nigeria.

Speaking during a public engagement, the NAFDAC boss stated that alcohol abuse is no longer just a health concern but a serious social and security issue.

According to her, the widespread availability of alcoholic drinks, especially in small and affordable sachets, has worsened underage drinking and reckless behaviour.

She noted that intoxication has been linked to violent crimes, including banditry, as well as fatal road crashes caused by drunk driving.

Prof. Adeyeye also raised concerns about the psychological effects of substance abuse among young people, warning that it increases the risk of depression and suicide.

The warning comes amid ongoing enforcement efforts against the production and sale of sachet alcohol across the country.

NAFDAC has been collaborating with other regulatory bodies to clamp down on unregulated and easily accessible alcoholic beverages.

Her statement has sparked debate online. While many Nigerians agree that alcohol abuse is a growing problem, others argue that deeper economic and security challenges also play major roles in banditry and youth unrest.

Nevertheless, the agency insists that reducing excessive alcohol consumption is a key step toward improving public health, safety, and national security.
