Spain Declares National Mourning Following Fatal High-Speed Train Collision

ADAMUZ, SPAIN – Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning after a catastrophic high-speed train collision in Andalusia left at least 41 people dead.

The accident occurred late Sunday night when the rear section of an Iryo train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed on a straight stretch of track, colliding with an oncoming Renfe train. Rescue teams worked through the night at “ground zero,” describing a horrific scene of twisted iron and debris scattered hundreds of meters from the impact site. While human error has been largely ruled out, early investigators have pointed to a possible broken rail joint. Over 150 people were injured in the crash, which is the deadliest rail disaster in Spain in over a decade.
