“Mum, the worst has happened.”

“Jacinta, what is it? Talk to me. What happened?”

“I caught Roy and Mercy having sex today.”

“What? They were having sex?”

“Yes mother.”

“So what Uche said was true. What happened after?”

“Roy dressed up and asked me to leave.”

“Leave to where? Where are your children?”

“I don’t know Mum. I just came back from a two weeks training. I wanted to surprise them but I was surprised instead.”

“Where are you now?”

“I am outside.”

“Go and wash your face, knock on the front door, come in as though nothing happened and just keep quiet. You must leave there with your children. Resume work tomorrow and don’t talk about it with anyone. It is just for now. Pretend as though nothing happened.”

She listened to her mother. She washed her face, calmed herself down, went to the front door and knocked. Roy opened the door and she hugged him as though she was just seeing him. He was in the sitting room with an uneasy Mercy. She greeted her too. She took her bags into the room and asked for her kids. Roy said they went shopping. She showered, had something to eat which was prepared by Mercy and waited for her kids. She was so happy to see them. That night, Roy came to her. He wanted to have sex. She cringed at his touch initially but later relaxed obeying her mother.

“I missed you so much, baby.” He said to her as he entered her. On a good day, the feeling would be heavenly and would produce countless moans but today, she felt nothing. She laid down like a log of wood and allowed him get his pleasure. Tears flowed from the sides of her face. The darkness saved her. “He did this with his sister, now he is doing same with me” was the only thought in her head.

The next morning, she got ready for work and left the house. She was actually off work for the rest of the week but she needed to get her sanity back. She drove to her mother’s house.

“I still believe I am dreaming. I can’t believe Roy and Mercy are lovers. Mum, what will happen now?”

“I suspected when you had the first baby. I saw things I shouldn’t have seen. How does a brother be in the same room with his sister who is stark naked? She asked him to rub cream on her back and he did and extended it to her buttocks. For what? That was why I got Uche to keep an eye on them. She saw more than she told you and you foolishly told Roy. It is not everything you tell your husband, you should have investigated first. I suspected they were not related but after a thorough investigation, I found out they were actually siblings.”

“I never believed Roy could betray me like that. Mercy was my best friend; how could she stab me like that?”

“Now you know, you need to inform their family members. Talk to your mother-in-law about it. It is an abomination and should be tackled immediately.”

She called her mother-in-law. She narrated everything to her. She did not get the reaction she was expecting. The woman listened quietly as she spoke. She had to repeatedly ask “are you there?” to ensure she was listening. When she finished, her mother-in-law responded.

“I had advised you to keep your mouth shut and not tell anyone what you saw in order to preserve your life. You should have turned a blind eye to their atrocity. Right now, your life and those of your children are at risk. My only advice to you is to play along for some time and look for how to escape with your children. Leave the country to a country where he will never find you. If possible change your name and identity and those of your children. He will come after you; be rest assured and you might lose your life.”

“Mother, you knew this and allowed me marry him? Why would you do that?”

“You were the first girl he ever introduced for marriage. I thought you had cured him. On the wedding night, I saw him leave your room for Mercy’s room. I stopped him and asked him if it wasn’t over now he had a wife, he laughed and said, “I can’t bear children with my sister. I need someone to do that for me.” He warned me that if I tell you, he will deal with me. I am afraid of Roy. He looks so innocent but he is not.”

“Why didn’t you do something about this? Why did you keep quiet? You are their mother for God’s sake. You watched this go on for years on end and did nothing.”

“What was I to do? Roy is his father; a sadist. When I found out and tried to put an end to it, Roy fought me about it. I called his father’s aunt whom everyone respected and confided in her. She admonished Roy and asked that both of them should be brought home for cleansing. Roy told her she wouldn’t make it back to the village. On her way back to her base, the vehicle she was in had an accident and she died on the spot. Since then, everyone kept away. I left their father before he died and ran to London. I couldn’t live in the same house where abomination is being done without remorse. My daughter, take my advice; strategize on how to leave him taking your children or you will regret it.”

She wasn’t much help after all. She only succeeded in putting fear into her. Her mother asked her to relax while she thinks of what to do. She sat down and opened her laptop. She saw a folder which she hadn’t seen before. Curiosity made her open it. She saw videos. She opened one. She watched the videos and was more shocked at each one. Could he deny these videos? Roy and Mercy had sex every day and nowhere was spared. He didn’t have this amount of sex with her. She could see him sneak out of their room at night to Mercy’s room and sneak back towards morning. How was he able to do that continuously without her waking up and finding out? She saw Mercy serving her juice. They had juice every night. Now she understood. They drugged her to sleep so they could be together. It was actually worse than she thought. She watched a part where her son, daughter, husband and sister-in-law were naked together in the sitting room. They were making out in front of her children. She was so shocked that she fell out of the chair. Her mother helped her up and asked what happened. She showed her mother the video… .
