At 48 years old, Woods embarked on Saturday’s third round of the tournament with a score of one over par, having achieved a record-breaking 24th consecutive cut.
Despite expressing optimism after the second round by stating that “anyone who makes the weekend has a chance,” Woods encountered difficulties in finding fairways, managing to hit only five out of 14. Consequently, he recorded a score of 80 or higher at a major event for only the third time.
Consecutive double bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes proved to be particularly detrimental, with Woods adding six more bogeys on the back nine.
His preparation for the Masters had been minimal, as he continues to recover from injuries sustained in a car accident in February 2021. The 15-time major champion has significantly reduced his tournament appearances following the life-threatening crash, which necessitated several surgeries, including on his legs and ankle.
Given his limited competitive play, merely making the cut and enduring on one of golf’s most challenging courses was considered a commendable accomplishment for Woods.
