TEXT: ARRANGED MARRIAGE
TEXT: GENESIS 24:61-67
1) THE KEY VERSE:
“And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel”

(Genesis 24:64).
2) THE TEXT:

(GENESIS 24: 61 – 67 KJV)
“61. And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62. And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.
63. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.
64. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.
65. For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.
66. And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
67. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”
3) THE MESSAGE:
i) Marriages were arranged by parents in ancient days because it is assumed they know better than their children in deciding the best partner for them.
ii) This act is still common in many parts of the world where women are not allowed to express their own preferences for marriage partner.
iii) In our text, Isaac left the task of choosing a wife into the hands of his father, who in turn committed the project into the hands of Eleazer, his servant.
iv) After much prayers, Abraham believed God would send an angel to lead Eleazer and aid him in the selection of a good wife. Everything apparently worked out well for Eleazer.
v) Soon, Rebekah was on her way to Isaac. But she hadn’t seen him until she got to the outskirt of the town.
vi) Though Abraham and the servant prayed for guidance before selecting a good wife which is akin to praying to know God’s will in marriage, it is unwise for a sister-in-Christ to commit to marrying someone she hasn’t even seen before or know his spiritual convictions and goals in life.
vii) A successful marriage is one laced with prayer and dependence on God for guidance. Believers should not marry unbelievers (Deuteronomy 7:3,4).
viii) Time should be set apart for courtship where intending couples trash out sensitive matters that could jeopardise their marriage.
ix) Meanwhile, parents should not insist on choosing life partners for their children but allow them pray to know God’s will. Even so, it must be done in pursuit of God’s glory alone.
4) THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
A marriage made in heaven is better than one made by parents.
5) BIBLE READING IN ONE YEAR:
OBADIAH;

PSALM 82-83
