Umahi defends concrete over asphalt for road technology

The ministry’s position on using concrete or asphalt for building federal roads around the country has been reaffirmed by Works Minister David Umahi, who has emphasized that there is still no disagreement on the matter.

According to him, there are requirements for using each technology on Nigerian roadways.

When Umahi received a courtesy call in his Abuja office from the national leadership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, led by its President, Tasiu Wudil, he revealed these policies.

Umahi claims that the need for clarification arose from the fact that, “all things are not equal and can only be understood by professionals and not by people who have no knowledge about them.” Several factors were raised in comparison to the concrete technology alternative.

statements signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister and the Assistant Director of information, media, and public relations in the ministry, Orji Uchenna and Clement Ezeorah, respectively, on Friday.

The minister expounded on the concerning pace of fluctuation in the costs of these two products, stating that the rise in asphalt follows a geometric pattern while the rise in concrete follows an arithmetic one.

He pointed out that because the Federal Government is the project’s primary funder, it must proceed cautiously and take the Ministry of Works’ budgetary allocation into account.

Concerned about the inadequate oversight of public works, Umahi pledged to collaborate with the Nigerian Society of Engineers to expose fraud and raise the standard of engineering services, particularly for federal road projects.
