The US men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat to host nation France in their Olympic opener on Wednesday.
The Olympic soccer tournament began two days before the Opening Ceremony, featuring predominantly under-23 players, with each nation allowed three overage players.
In their first Olympic appearance since 2008, the young US team faced a tough test against the hosts but looked capable of an upset for the first hour.
Under coach Marko Mitrović, the Americans were threatening in attack and nearly scored in the first half as France struggled with the occasion.
