At the Afcon finals, Osimhen has the highest expected goals and attempts at goal stats. After taking 13 shots, he scored his lone goal from a combined xG of 2.72.
This is a strange situation for the 25-year-old, who is under a lot of pressure to perform well not just for Nigeria but also to earn the title of continental player of the year, which he won in December.
Osimhen acknowledges that he hasn’t yet reached his peak but feels that despite his missed opportunities, he has made a positive overall contribution to the club.
“I have one goal in three games – not so good for my kind of person but of course, I’m still a work in progress,” he stated.
“It’s my first official Afcon. It’s reasonable for me to feel like I have a long way to go, and I have a lot of things I want to offer the squad.
“I am the first to criticize myself before anyone else does. So far, though, so good.
“Even though my goals haven’t materialized yet, I’ve been performing well. I believe I’ve been able to encourage and support my teammates by fighting hard for them, chasing every ball, and standing up for them.
