What do you do when you happen to be famous for playing the most popular sport in the whole world, earn tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds a week, and can afford practically everything a young and ambitious man would ever need or want?

Well, if the lifestyles of the highest footballers are anything to go by, buying fast and luxurious supercars is the way to go.

Footballers are well known for their lifestyles, for which even the word “flashy” occasionally sounds like an understatement. The most iconic representation of their taste for the good things in life, however, has to be their love for pretty things on 4 wheels.

No matter how good the car looks, and how expensive you think it is when you first learn about it, chances are high there’s a football star somewhere who owns it. Even more outrageous, he’s probably already bored of it and is about to move on to the next pretty toy!

Why Sports Cars?

We’ve come a long way from horses to cars. The whole idea when the car was first invented was to make a caravan that didn’t need to be pulled by horses. A horse, while certainly a beautiful and strong creature, can only go so fast and it also has its limits.

When you figure out a way to get something move without having a horse in the equation then there is practically no limit to how fast you can go.

Of course, in the beginning, it was less about getting caravans to move very fast and more about caravans to move without horses in the first place We still fondly commemorated horses by using them as the symbol of power in the new metal engines that drove our cars. We called that power “horsepower”, and it has been so ever since.

With man-made ‘horses’ pulling our caravans (my friend from ProEssayWriting swears that ‘caravan’ is probably where ‘car’ and ‘van’ came from) along at incredible speeds, some people decided to innovate further, and two particular areas proved to be very promising for innovation: speed and luxury.

No matter how fast a car was, and is, you could always figure out a way to make a faster one. Likewise, no matter how luxurious one car was, and is, there was nothing stopping you from making one that was even more luxurious, especially when tastes and things that came into the purview of the definition of luxury changed.

In that sense, then, sports cars, which are both very fast and very luxurious, represent the pinnacle of human automobile art. Not only does a lot of effort and creativity go into creating them, but they are also collectible representations of what humanity can do when they really put their mind to it.

Consequently, cars like the Lamborghini, the Audi, the Porsche, the Ferrari, and the Mercedes are pretty expensive and a great way to show off your wealth. Why wouldn’t footballers love them?

That said, here are some famed footballers and their favorite cars.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Ferrari)

Cristiano Ronaldo happens to be one of the most well-paid sportsmen in the entire world. His cars, as a result, are also pretty cool!

His collection of cars is now approaching 2 million pounds in value and keeps growing. With 19 cars in total, it’s possible to dedicate an entire article to this man’s car collection.

However, today we’ll point out his Ferrari 5999 GTO, which has a V12 engine and 661 hp (horsepower). The top speed is a pretty high 203 mph and it takes only 3.1 seconds to go from 0-60 mph.

This beauty costs $450,000, which to Cristiano might as well be pocket change.

2. James Rodrigues (Audi R8)

The Mexican footballer is one of the many European footballers who have developed a fondness for this supercar. In fact, he loves to drive it really fast and has been caught driving at double the speed limit in a 60 zone.

All the same, it’s a beautiful car and one that we would expect any footballer to own.

3. Lionel Messi (1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider)

Arguably the world’s best footballer (Only Cristiano Ronaldo can seriously challenge that claim), Lionel Messi also happens to have the most expensive car on this list.

The Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti cost $32 million at auction and was fully paid for by Messi. Despite its age, it goes from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds and looks absolutely stunning.

When we speak of supercars, this is one of those cars that immediately come to mind. The funny part is that Messi also happens to own a Toyota Prius, which he proudly drives around.

4. Eden Hazard (Audi R8)

Another Audi R8 makes it to this list, being owned by Eden Hazard.

This Audi R8 V10 has 550 hp and does 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. It retails for $139,950 in case you’re thinking of getting one.

5. Neymar Junior (Porsche Panamera)

Neymar owns a lot of cars, including the Audi R8, but he has also been seen cruising around in his Porsche Panamera a lot. The car cost over $100,000 and has a top speed of 161 mph. It also does 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Final Thoughts
Footballers are lofty and ambitious people, both on and off the field. They don’t just want to exist; they want to stand out in their lives, their actions, and their possessions. Great cars help them to do that and I don’t think we’ll be seeing the last of their beautiful four-wheeled toys any time soon. If it costs a lot and moves very fast, you can be sure a footballer somewhere is going to buy it soon enough.
