FORMER close aide of Osama bin Laden has returned to Afghanistan just hours before the final withdrawal of US troops.
Top Al-Qaeda arms supplier Amin ul-Haq, who was also responsible for guarding terror chief, was filmed returning to his hometown in the Nangahar province of Afghanistan.
Ul-Haq managed to escape with bin Laden when the pair were cornered by US forces in the Tora Bora caves, where they fled to after the American-led invasion following 9/11.
His return to Afghanistan will fuel fears that the Taliban will once again harbour terrorists planning to attack the West as they did prior to the attacks on the US.
The video shows him waving to admirers from inside a car and at one point it stops and he winds down the window.
Some bystanders crowd the vehicle’s passenger side, with men taking turns grasping and even kissing his hand.
Two men take a few steps forward along with the slow-moving car in order to take a next to ul-Haq.
The vehicle is then followed by a procession of vehicles carrying heavily-armed fighters, some flying the Taliban flag.
Ul-Haq headed bin Laden’s security – known as the Black Guard – when they were hiding in the cave complex being pounded by US bombers and hunted by special forces.
Despite being surrounded, they managed to give the pursuers the slip by bribing local tribesmen and made it across the border into Pakistan.
Ul-Haq was arrested in 2008 but freed three years later when police said they were unable to find evidence of links to bin Laden, the Telegraph reported at the time.
According to the UN he was responsible for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts” on behalf of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda.
He was also involved in “supplying, selling or transferring arms and related materiel to” or “otherwise supporting acts or activities of” the terrorists.
Ul-Haq, who is a doctor, reportedly has a long history of involvement with armed groups going back to fighting the Soviet forces in the 1980s.
He was part of the Afghan delegation which travelled to Sudan in the 1996 to bring bin Laden to Afghanistan
The US froze al-Haq’s assets after the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Earlier this month a report from the Pentagon Office of the Inspector General claimed Al-Qaeda has once again has a safe place in which to plot mass murder.
“The Taliban continued to maintain its relationship with Al Qaeda, providing safe haven for the terrorist group in Afghanistan,” said the study.
