Leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and delegates of the Federal Government are expected to meet today at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

The meeting is scheduled to hold at 5:00 pm today. The meeting comes after last week’s meeting by the striking lecturers and the Federal Government which ended with no resolution.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, at the end of the meeting last week told journalists that discussion with ASUU will continue today. He added that he is optimistic that the resumed discussions will lead to the suspension of the industrial action

The lecturers at the end of the meeting insisted that the industrial action embarked upon by its members will continue.

The lecturers embarked on industrial action on November 5, accusing the Federal Government of failing to implement the key areas of focus contained in a memorandum of action signed in 2017.

Some of the issues and demands by the lecturers include better funding of Nigerian universities, implementation of previous agreements, earned academic allowances, salary shortfalls and pension matters

According to the President of the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the union’s position is aimed at repositioning the nation’s universities for global relevance.
