CAF African Champions League Final To Be Replayed

The second leg of the CAF African Champions League final between Esperance of Tunis and Wydad Casablanca was abandoned on June 2nd, 2019 after Wydad Casablanca’s equaliser was ruled offside by Gambian refereee Bakary Papa Gassama.

Esperence were leading 1-0 at the time and players and officials of Wydad Casablanca appealed to the referee to review the goal using the Video Assisted Referee (VAR) system, but the system was not working because an important component was missing. The referee was aware that the system was not working, but the players were unaware.

Wydad players subsequently walked off the field and Esperance were declared the winners of the match. The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw and so Esperance were declared champions.

However, after a heated meeting in Paris today, the CAF Executive Committee has decided that the match should be replayed in a neutral venue.
