Chelsea have opted against using the buy-back clause for winger Jeremie Boga despite becoming one of Serie A’s most exciting players since joining Sassuolo in 2018.

The west London club have negotiated a sell-on clause with Sassuolo ahead of an expected move in the next transfer window, with fellow Serie A club Napoli thought to be interested in the 23-year-old.

Boga came through the Chelsea youth system but played only 18 minutes of competitive football for the first team and spent several spells out on loan before a permanent move to the Serie A in 2018.

Since then the winger has developed into an exciting and consistent player for the mid-table side, scoring eight goals and recording four assists this season, leading the former France youth international to be linked with a transfer this summer.

While a move back to Chelsea does not look to be on the cards, Boga looks likely to move on from Sassuolo this summer and Napoli have emerged as the frontrunners, according to Italy-based journalist Fabrizio Romano.

A tweet by Romano read: ‘Chelsea have decided against using their buyback clause for Sassuolo’s Jérémie Boga. He’s staying in Italy – top season this year. Napoli are interested in him.’

The story was expanded by Romano in the Guardian, where he states Chelsea has a buy-back price of £13million but have now decided to get a percentage of the expected future sale.

Napoli are the club thought to be most keenly interested, with manager Genaro Gattuso an admirer of the winger.

Boga’s career has included loan spells at clubs as varied as Rennes, Granada and Birmingham, but now looks to have found his feet.
