Throughout the Official Basketball Rules, all references made to a player, coach, official, etc. in
the male gender also apply to the female gender. It must be understood that this is done for
practical reasons only.

RULE ONE – THE GAME
Art. 1 Definitions
1.1 Basketball game
Basketball is played by 2 teams of 5 players each. The aim of each team is to score in
the opponents’ basket and to prevent the other team from scoring.
The game is controlled by the officials, table officials and a commissioner, if present.
1.2 Basket: opponents’/own
The basket that is attacked by a team is the opponents’ basket and the basket which
is defended by a team is its own basket.
1.3 Winner of a game
The team that has scored the greater number of game points at the end of playing
time shall be the winner.
24-Second Clock
This is where the majority of the major rule changes have come in. The changes include:
- When a jump ball is called as a result of the ball being stuck between the backboard and the ring, the shot clock WILL be reset to 14 seconds if the offensive team regains the ball, or 24 seconds if the defensive team gains possession.
- If there is a foul or violation by a team in control of the ball, the opposition will receive the ball. If they are receiving the ball in their frontcourt, the shot clock will be reset to 14 seconds, NOT 24 seconds. Examples of this would include (but are not limited to):
- An 8 seconds in the backcourt violation
- An illegal screen called in the backcourt, with the opposition team therefore receiving the ball in their frontcourt
- When the clock shows 2:00 or less in the fourth quarter or overtime, if a team calls a timeout when they would otherwise have possession in their backcourt, they now have a choice:
- Keep the ball in their backcourt at the intended throw-in point, with shot clock resetting to 24 or remaining, as defined by the regular shot clock rules.
- Advance the ball to the frontcourt, where the shot clock will reset DOWN to 14 (if it was over 14) or hold (if it is 14 or under when the timeout was called).
Technical Fouls, Unsportsmanlike Fouls and Disqualifying Fouls
There are several changes in this area of the rules. These changes include:
- A technical foul penalty is only one (1) free throw. Possession of the ball at half-way is not a part of the technical foul penalty any longer. The game will then resume where it was at the time of the technical foul, with the ball awarded to the team who was entitled to possession at that point in time.
- When an unsportsmanlike foul, disqualifying foul or fight occurs, the throw-in after free throws will be administered from the throw-in line in the team’s frontcourt and the team will have 14 seconds on their shot clock.
- In the last two (2) minutes of the final quarter or overtime (clock shows 2:00 or less), the referee will signal (see image to the right) before every throw-in that the defender should not put any part of their body over the line to interfere with the throw in. Any defender who does so will be penalised with an automatic technical foul.
