Confusion As Anambra Lawmakers Make U-Turn On Speaker’s Impeachment

There was confusion at the Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday over the impeachment of the Speaker, Ms Rita Mmaduagwu.

This followed a motion for impeachment moved by the member representing Aguata II Constituency, Mr Ikem Uzoezie, during plenary at the Assembly chamber in Awka, the state capital.

The motion was seconded by Onyebuchi Offor who represents Ekwusigo Constituency of the state.

Uzoezie was purportedly elected as the new speaker.

The lawmakers had accused Mmaduagwu of incompetency, financial impropriety and high-handedness, among other allegations.

About 22 members were present at the plenary but only three lawmakers initially kicked against the impeachment.

Also, the three members were said to have been suspended on allegations of gross misconduct.

The Clerk of the House, Mr Pius Udoh, was also against the inauguration of the new speaker.

Udoh stated that the lawmakers did not follow due process.

Some of the other lawmakers, however, made a U-turn and upturned the impeachment process.

They stated that the allegations against the speaker were unsubstantiated and pledged their loyalty to her.

The plenary was later brought to an end and adjourned till Thursday.
