Officials of the Nigerian Customs Service have impounded 5,119 bags of illegally imported rice, vegetable oil and textile materials worth millions of Naira in Kaduna and Kano States.

The National Co-ordinator in charge of the Comptroller General of Customs Strike Force, Abdullahi Kirawa, disclosed this on Wednesday while displaying the seized items in Kaduna.

He told journalists that the goods were smuggled into the country through the Kano-Jigawa illegal borders and were intercepted by his men based on intelligence information.

Kirawa explained that the seizure of the goods was in line with the Federal Government’s directive of zero tolerance for importation of rice and other banned products through illegal routes.

He, therefore, advised those that engage in smuggling to desist from such acts, and take advantage of the Federal Government’s policy on local rice production in order to assist the country in attaining self-sufficiency in rice production.

Furthermore, Kirawa announced that arrests have been made and the suspects will soon be charged to court after investigation.
