RIVERS OF LIVING WATER
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) — JOHN 7:37-39
Jesus used water as a type of the Holy Spirit.
Notice that there are two different experiences referred to in our texts for yesterday and today. One, the New Birth, is a well of water in you, springing up into everlasting life. The other, the infilling of the Holy Spirit, is rivers. Not just one river — but rivers.
The water in the well (salvation) is for one purpose: It blesses you. It is for your benefit. But the rivers (the infilling of the Holy Spirit) flow out of you to bless someone else. The purpose of being filled with the Holy Spirit is so that you might be a blessing to others.
Some people say, “If you are born of the Spirit, you have the Spirit, and that’s all there is to it.” But, no, just because you’ve had one drink of water is no sign that you’re full of water. There is an experience subsequent to the New Birth of being filled with the Holy Spirit — and as a result of being filled, rivers of living water flow out of the belly (the spirit).
Confession:
I am filled with the Spirit of God. Rivers of living water flow from my innermost being.
