Robson de Souza, the former Brazilian footballer commonly known as Robinho, was apprehended by Federal Police on Thursday in Santos, located in the Brazilian state of São Paul. Police vehicles were observed departing from his residence in Santos.
The 40-year-old ex-AC Milan and Brazil striker is confronting a nine-year prison sentence following his conviction in Italy for participating in the gang rape of a woman alongside five other men in 2013. The incident occurred after the victim was intoxicated with alcohol at a nightclub in Milan.
Robinho’s arrest coincides with Brazil’s Supreme Court (STF) rejecting his appeal on Thursday to remain free pending the exhaustion of all judicial appeals against his conviction. The STF ordered the “immediate” commencement of his prison term, as stated in a release from the STF.
According to the STF decision, Robinho’s defense team had petitioned Brazilian authorities to permit him to serve his prison sentence in Italy instead of Brazil and to remain at liberty throughout the duration of all appeal proceedings. However, the STF ruled against this request.
It’s important to note that Robinho has consistently denied the allegations against him.
