Manchester United fans will no doubt be excited by some of the names linked with the club, but the arrival of new faces will bring questions about some of those currently at the club.
Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, Jack Grealish and James Maddison are the club’s top targets, and there are only so many places to fill in each matchday squad.
With that in mind, we’ve picked out four players whose futures could be under threat if deals are completed.
Alexis Sanchez
Sanchez’s Old Trafford future has been up in the air for a while, as evidenced by his loan move to Inter Milan, but the arrival of younger players capable of playing in his position only adds to that.
The Chilean has played just 15 times during his loan spell with Inter – seven starts and eight appearances from the bench – as injury impeded his chances of impressing enough to either make a big-money exit inevitable or convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of his worth at United.
If either Sancho or Bellingham joins in the next transfer window, that would leave United in possession of a 31-year-old with his best days seemingly behind him, plus a significantly younger alternative for whom the sky’s the limit. With that in mind, it doesn’t look promising for the former Arsenal man.
Jesse Lingard
Injuries and poor form have come at an unfortunate time for Lingard, too, limiting the academy graduate to just 19 league starts in the 2018/19 campaign, and he hasn’t been able to re-establish himself under Solskjaer this time around.
Lingard has started just nine times in the league, the last time coming in the New Year’s Day defeat at Arsenal, when he was withdrawn before the hour mark. His last goal in the competition, meanwhile, came all the way back in Solskjaer’s first temporary game in charge back in December 2018.
The January arrival of Bruno Fernandes, and the Portuguese midfielder’s impressive early form for United, instantly limited the number of spots available for Lingard even if he was able to replicate the impressive form which took him to the 2018 World Cup with England. The additional arrival of Maddison or Grealish, younger English talents comfortable in a number of midfield roles, could well spell the end.
Marcos Rojo
Rojo has looked to be on his way out for a while now, but a slew of new arrivals in the next window could be what seals the deal as United look to free up wages and squad places.
The defender hasn’t played 10 league games in a season since 2016/17, and had only featured nine times in all competitions this time around before Solskjaer allowed him to return to hometown club Estudiantes on loan in January.
At 30 years of age, Rojo could well decide now is the time for a permanent return to Argentina, having made just 27 appearances across the last three seasons for United.
Another defender who has found himself surplus to requirements of late, Jones has played just eight times in 2019/20 and last made a league appearance in the home defeat against Burnley in January.
Despite signing a new deal early in Solskjaer’s reign, keeping him on United’s books until 2023, the former Blackburn youngster may not be part of the manager’s plans going forward.
This could also be compounded if they opt to welcome Chris Smalling back into the fold after an impressive loan spell at Roma.
United will only have a finite number of spots in their Premier League squad next season, and the more new faces arrive, the harder it becomes to see a place for Jones.
