How Chinese Company, Palmpay Ruined My Life

I am not writing from a place of pain but relief, however, I feel for ex-colleagues who are still ”stuck” at PalmPay (A multi-cultural organization that consists of Chinese, British, Taiwanese and Nigerians). Do you wonder why I termed it ”stuck” and not ”work”?

Here is why:

  1. Job Security: Staff doesn’t even know who is getting sacked next. One minute you are gisting at the cafeteria with someone who is holding a major position at the organization the next minute you hear the person has been fired via text message or even a WhatsApp message!

-The Senior Marketing Manager was laid off in January for injustice reasons( Mismanagement of branded materials. Imagine getting home and telling his family that!!! Crazy, right? the story gets crazier if you keep reading. Imagine going home for the holiday and telling your family you have been sacked via SMS. One of the regional agent managers whose name I would not mention here for security reasons was laid off with no prior warning as well. In fact, he was laid off as a show of power (The Chinese team led by one mafia called Chris (he is rumored to be a hired assassin in China) just wants to show the other teams that they are in control and they have an edge over the British team)

  1. Staff Welfare: The organization is now a poaching center for the likes of Opay, Interswitch Quickteller, Fairmoney, Carbon and other true companies with value PalmPay is competitors with such organization but they can’t match the staff welfare. The old staff members have joined for close to 2 years and there is no form of appraisal, mention of a raise or promotion and this has led to the resignation of some top-level staff at the organization. Right now 10 members of the Nigerian management team have resigned or been sacked between November and February (those who are still there are assiduously looking for a job immediately they realized the company is not a serious company when it comes to welfare) There is also uneven compensation as new staff is paid extremely well as against old staff. There is no fast rule for this, but this action divides the team and creates an unbalanced work relationship.
  2. Company Culture: Culture and values, career opportunities and visionary leadership are what other organizations have but PalmPay lacks. The Nigerian arm of PalmPay is headed by a Chinese who does nothing but petty deliverables like buying chalkboards and arrange a lean end of the year party. If your country manager has no payment experience then you can say that you are working in a directionless ship that touts all the bells and whistles but lack a clear direction. It’s inevitable that if the organization hits the icebergs or big challenges it’s going to end up sinking.
  3. Racism: The way the company is structured, blacks are labeled as second class staff of the company with the white people are the only people growing in the company structure. I remembered when the company started and one Nigerian staff used to be very active but now because she was black, they relegated her and brought one Professor Sun to be in charge. As it is, the Chinese have their own office while the Nigerians also have their own office even though they just recently relocated office. May I surprise you that racism is so much in this company and even to the highest level that it is very coordinated; Chinese vs Taiwanese vs British all against the Nigerians. In that company, you are paid based on what colour of skin you have as it is. White people get paid so high that it can crash the company while the black people get paid so low that you’d think they are beggars. If you are fair in the company, you would get paid higher as well.
  4. Lies and Low Wage: Nothing irks me in all of these more than the low wage being paid in this company. Remember the man I mentioned earlier yeah? Steven Sun, he is the king of low and rubbish payments. I remember when I first met him, he offered to pay me 30,000 NGN as a salary for a full-time job! You can imagine. The thing with this point is how they keep lying to everyone who cares to listen, from workers who they tell they would promote to staff to potential clients and everyone else. Currently, they tell you they are giving you palmpoints but do you know they are stealing your money from your bank account that you have added to the application? If you doubt this, audit your bank account and you would know.

In summary, this company is going to position themselves like a Nigerian company but it is not, you would find one global head of marketing named Sofia Zabolotskih claiming that it is a Nigerian company but she would never want Nigerians to even express ideas, the last I heard was she sacked one Nigerian as well. She is one of the cankerworms in that company alongside that Steven Sun as well whose real name is Sun Haojin.

In case you see a job opening from that company, run oooo, run! I am happy to have left that toxic work environment myself because it was a scam company.
