OrderPaperToday – A fresh trouble is brewing for Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano) as the House of Representatives has referred him to its Ethics and Privileges Committee over his comment on the National Assembly joint session held yesterday.

The decision to refer Jibrin to the disciplinary committee followed the adoption of a motion of privilege moved by Sunday Karimi (PDP, Kogi).

It would be recalled that the same committee recommended the suspension of Mr. Jibrin in 2016 for 180 legislative days and remained locked out of the parliament until he formally apologized to the House.

On Tuesday, following a joint session of the National Assembly where strong resolutions were raised as demands to be met by President Muhammadu Buhari otherwise constitutional consequences could be invoked against the Head of State, Jibrin in a press statement claimed that the executive session would easily pass for “PDP executive session” and that lawmakers who had corruption and criminal issues with the state should not drag their personal ordeals into the legislature.

Mr. Karimi who came under Order 6, Rule 2 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives stated that the insinuation by Jibrin is a falsehood that requires proper investigation.

According to Karimi “yesterday we had a joint sitting with the Senate; as soon as the meeting was concluded, one of our member went to the press to raise issue that seems to contradict the outcome of our meeting.

“Turned the issue to a PDP affair. Abdulmumin claimed that it was a PDP affair; Mr Speaker there is a need for Abdulmumin to be called to order, not to turn the House upside down. If you are going to speak to press, speak the truth.”

Meanwhile, Gudaje Kazure (APC, Jigawa) was also referred to Ethics Committee for his press conference he held shortly after the joint session. The Jigawa legislator had alleged that lawmakers were collecting signatures to impeach the President.

The Chairman of the Ethics committee, Ossai Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta) has however recused himself from the latter investigation, as he was accused by Kazaure of spearheading the move to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, in his ruling condemned members that fail to come for plenary but rush to make press statements which are contrary to what truly happens during plenary.

“I have problem with members that refuse to come during plenary and go to press to make false statement; I saw the member sneaking in and out, it is unfortunate.

While Ossai was allowed to recuse himself from Kazaure’s investigation, he was mandated to conduct the other investigation involving Mr. Jibrin.
