Speaking at a two-day workshop for Election Monitoring Implementers for the North East Zone, in Yola, Adamawa state capital, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stated it uncovered names of 1224 dead persons in the voter register in the State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Kassim Gaidam who spoke on behalf of the electoral commission at the event, disclosed that the names were uncovered through the voter clean-up exercise in the state.

“The statistics of 1,224 dead persons, which we can confirm were on the register, were uncovered during the recent display of voter register for claims and objections,” he added.

This is coming after INEC disclosed that 1,504,858 people had collected their permanent voter cards in Enugu State. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr. Emeka Ononamadu, who disclosed this while addressing members of the Civil Society Organisations and Inter-Party Advisory Council in a meeting in Enugu, expressed concern about the spate of violence in the primaries organised by political parties.

Ononamadu described the violence as worrisome, adding that such a situation was new to the history of primary elections in the state. He, however, expressed optimism that such ugly incidents would not be witnessed in the next general elections, adding that citizens should work to put a stop to electoral violence.

He disclosed that the total number of registered voters in the state was 1,958,547. He further noted that out of the fresh registration of 14,551,482 voters in the country, the state registered 549,326.
