Irked by Alex Iwobi’s dip in form since joining Everton last summer, former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan has passed a vote of no confidence on the former Arsenal midfielder.

The Super Eagles midfielder moved to Goodison Park in a record fee of £28m, but the youngster has come under a barrage of criticism for not living up to expectation after he suffered a long dip in form coupled with series of injuries.Whelan, therefore, warned the Nigerian to dig deeper into his books of tricks and come up with something special or risked being described as one of Everton’s biggest flop.

“I think we expected a lot more from him, from what we saw at Arsenal, with the big money that they paid for him,” he told Football Insider.“He’s not hit the heights that we expected. A lot of Everton fans that watch him are frustrated by him.“This is an opportunity now for him to go out there and show why they spent that money, show Ancelotti that he deserves a place in that starting line up but he’s got big boots to fill,” he said. The arrival of Abdoulaye Dacoure had threw up debate on Iwobi’s future but manager Carlo Ancelotti has kept faith with the former Gunner star. Whelan further warned the midfielder to come up with goals and demonstrate football intelligence or face a long spell on the bench.

“If he doesn’t come up with something special, he’ll find his bum back on the bench because he needs to score goals, he needs to show assists and he needs to show that intelligence on the ball,” he said.
