Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has explained how he ended up waking Sir Alex Ferguson at 3:30am after winning the league.

Legendary former Manchester United manager Ferguson made the admission when he delivered a brilliant message as he presented the German with the League Managers Association ‘Manager of the Year’ award.

Putting rivalry aside to congratulate Klopp on a delivering a first league title at Anfield for 30 years, Fergie said: “I will forgive you for waking me up at 3:30am to tell me you won the league”.

Klopp has now revealed the context behind waking up the 78-year-old at such an inconvenient time, stating that he had a whole host of messages congratulating he and the Reds’ squad following Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in June.

But only managed to look at them when he came back into his room after some wild celebrations and not thinking the Scotsman would have his phone turned on, Klopp apologised to the 13-time Premier League winner.”The problem was that I came back late in my room that night and I couldn’t sleep immediately so I went through the messages I got and one of them was from Alex Ferguson,” Klopp, said as per BT.

“I just replied in a very polite way I think. It was about 3.30am-4am and I didn’t expect him to have his phone next to his bed. I didn’t want to wake him up. If that happened then sorry Alex!

“Since then we have not been in contact. He is still the former Man United manager and I don’t think he wants to talk to me too much about the success of Liverpool. He respects it but it’s not his favourite thing to watch on television.”

Though it would have pained him to do so, Ferguson also sent a classy message to compatriot Sir Kenny Dalglish after Liverpool won their 19th league title and moved one ahead of their rivals on 43 trophies.

“He has contacted us to say congratulations by the modern medium,” Dalglish said, as per Metro.

“You go through the older generation, Fergie at Man United, Brian Kidd, Mike Summerbee, all the old foes who went through football at the same time and at the end of the year you sent a letter of congratulations.

“That continues. It is a great compliment. You are in competition and you are rivals but to have the intelligence so you are magnanimous enough to send in a letter saying congratulations.

“These days it has gone more technical, you get your texts or emails off the people who you have been competing with all your life.”
