Manchester City could lose Leroy Sane to Liverpool, should Jurgen Klopp make a move for him, believes former England defender Danny Mills.

Sane has one year remaining on his deal with the Premier League champions, but Mills claims it would be difficult to ignore an offer from the Merseyside club given their success over the past 12 months.

While he admits clubs are unlikely to sell to their immediate rivals, he believes there have been far more improbable transfers during the Premier League era.

The former City defender told Football Insider of Sane: ‘Clubs do not want to sell to their immediate rivals and that is normally the biggest problem.

‘If Liverpool want Sane I am pretty sure he would go there given the opportunity. Why wouldn’t you?

‘We have seen players do far worse. It is not a Manchester United-Liverpool or a Leeds-Manchester United. The rivalry is not of that ilk.’

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been long admirers of the City winger, who has been linked with a move away for the past 12 months.

City have rejected previous offers from Bayern as they tried to persuade Sane to stay at the Etihad.

City believed Sane to be worth around £140m last year when Bayern made their interest public, but as the 24-year-old enters into the final 12 months of his contract amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is unlikely they will attain such a high figure.

His market value also took a hit after he sustained a horror injury in the Community Shield, resulting in him being out of action ever since due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Bayern are looking to take advantage in the potential fall in the transfer market to sign Sane for just £35m.

Bayern’s opening bid of £35m is £11m less than City paid Schalke for Sane when they signed him in 2016.

The Germany international’s new agent recently detailed that Bayern are the only German club he would consider joining yet claimed others around Europe are tracking his situation.

Ex-Blues midfielder Owen Hargreaves has claimed as much, telling Goal: ‘Bayern is always on the agenda for any top German player as you compete for titles, leagues and Champions Leagues.

‘With Leroy Sane at Man City, if he leaves, there’s probably only four teams he would go to. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich are the only ones who can offer something compared to what he has at City.’
