Manchester United and Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a summer transfer for Rennes left back Faitout Maouassa.

The versatile left back had impressed for Rennes this season before the coronavirus pandemic halted play, helping guide his side to third in Ligue 1 with 10 matches remaining.

And according to L’Equipe, United and Newcastle are competing for the signature of Maouassa with both sides tracking his progress ahead of a potential summer move.

The Magpies, who are on the brink of a huge £300million Saudi-led takeover, made a £7m offer for the star in the winter but a move failed to come to fruition.

But Newcastle haven’t given up in their hopes of signing Maouassa, with the Premier League outfit staying in touching with the French youth international since.

Meanwhile, United are also keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old’s situation, whose contract at Rennes expires in the summer of 2021.

Maouassa has yet to enter negotiations with the club over extending his contract but he would reportedly love to compete in the Champions League for Rennes should they eventually be able to secure their position among Europe’s elite.

Maouassa has been a mainstay in the Rennes starting line-up this season, featuring 32 times in all competitions – scoring three times and providing two assists.

The Frenchman has attracted interest from England thanks to his versatility across the pitch – he can also operate on the left-side of midfield or as a left winger.
