Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have set an unwanted record for the first time since 2005 in the Champions League.

Both superstars will not feature in semi-finals for the first time since 2005 after Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo’s Juventus, meanwhile, was knocked out by Lyon at the last-16 stage after the Ligue 1 giant secure a spot in the last eight via an away goal.

Messi and Ronaldo have enjoyed much success in the Champions League down the years with both pair winning the tournament combine nine times.

However, with Messi aged 33 and Ronaldo 35 there are concerns that this could be a changing of the guard moment.

In the 2004-05 season Messi, who was just starting his career, only featured once in the Champions League as Barcelona were knocked out by Chelsea in the last 16.

Ronaldo unable to prevent Manchester United go out in the last-16 after Sir Alex Ferguson’s side being beaten by AC Milan.
