Mikel Plans Retirement At Stoke City

Still basking in the euphoria of his new move to Stoke City on Monday, erstwhile Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel could be planning to hang his boot at the Potters, Stoketrentlive can report.

The former Chelsea midfielder joined Stoke City on a free transfer after he was released by Trabzonspor in March over Covid-19 spat with the club’s chieftains, but the midfield enforcer is said to be planning to hang his boot at the club barring any last-minute hitches.

Stoke manager Michael O’Neil told Stokecityfc that he had four hours chat with the Nigerian who expressed his desperation to return to England and end his career there.“I was really impressed with him when we met for the first time and he outlined what he wants from the next phase of his career.“We spent four hours talking and he made it clear he wants to get back into the Premier League and finish his career there and hopefully he can do that with Stoke City,” he told StokeCityfc

Mikel moved to the Bet365 stadium following a successful medical despite interest from Russia.The defensive midfielder, 33, admitted he needs time to regain full fitness after which he is expected to hit the ground running at Staffordshire.Mikel had about 400 caps for Chelsea over an 11-year stint at Stamford Bridge, helping to club win Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup and Charity Shield.Stoke finished the 2019-20 Championship season in 15th place, eight points clear of the relegation zone.
