Nigerians React To Yomi Shogunle’s “Sex In The Car Is Not A Crime” Statement

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Yomi Shogunle, has reacted to the “sex in the car” question trending on social media.

Over 24 hours ago, pictures of a young man and woman caught pants down in a car surfaced on social media, Facebook.

Since then, the viral pictures have sparked questions bothering on if the Nigerian law permits sexual acts in the car.

In this regard, a twitter @Stanley_Moses13 asked, “Oga Yomi Shogunle please is it a crime to have sex in your car?

Below is his response:

Section 231 of the Criminal Code also addresses this act

In June 2016, Vincent Chikwukume and Nnandi Ujunwa were arranged before Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for allegedly having sexual intercourse in a car. The prosecutor was a police officer, A.Z. Dalhatu, on routine surveillance at Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja.

Also in January 2016, two men Innocent Egbuna and Jide Ajayi were caught having anal sex in an SUV by Sgt. Joseph Ajebe along Ajao Road and were paraded in a Magistrates’ Court in Ikeja.

The men were arranged on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and act of gross indecency.

While these are typical examples, police officials also take disciplinary action when it constitutes a public disturbance.

Despite this education, Nigerians have become divided over his response.
