Novak Djokovic is punished for shattering a racquet in the men's final at Wimbledon in 2023.

 

The incident happened when the 36-year-old Serbian’s serve was broken in the third game of the fifth set of his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.

Djokovic was promptly given a warning for the infraction by umpire Fergus Murphy.

The sum will be subtracted from his £1.175 million runner-up check.

In the deciding set of a thrilling match on Sunday, Djokovic’s irritation had grown when he wasted a straightforward opportunity at the net for a break to go 2-0 ahead.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion’s service was broken by Alcaraz in the very next game, which caused Djokovic to lose control and drew boos from several spectators in the Centre Court crowd.

After four hours and 42 minutes, world number one Alcaraz sealed a victory with a 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 score.

The 20-year-old’s triumph at the All England Club prevented Djokovic from winning a 24th grand slam championship.
