Security sources said the blast, which happened on Sunday night, likely came from an improvised explosive device (IED).

Eyewitnesses said they heard the deafening explosion from the premises of Dorino Hotel around 9:00pm.

Police spokesman Muhammed Jalige told journalists that the substance was likely to be an IED, adding that the anti-bomb squad was at the scene.

He said details of their findings would be made available to the press, adding that there was no casualty from the explosion, while the destruction it caused was minimal.

Jalige said, “The explosion is suspected to be IED; there is no casualty recorded in the incident. There was nobody in the building when it exploded.”

The same night, a suspicious object was also removed from a Kaduna pub where many football fans watched a match between Liverpool and Chelsea football clubs.

The pub owner Larry Nuhu removed the object to a fairly safe distance that night and called the police yesterday.

An eyewitness said, “I saw the object wrapped in a black bag with a battery connected to it, the kind of battery motorcycles use. But this morning being Monday, the Kaduna State Commissioner of police came with some bomb experts and removed the object.”

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan visited the scene yesterday evening.

Aruwan urged the pub owner to scale up his personal security in the area, while assuring everyone that the government would also step up security in the state.

The government also urged residents to be on the alert.

Between 70 and 80 persons watched the match.
