Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has announced that Italy will remain in a state of lockdown until May 3.

Italy has been in a national quarantine since March 9, with the country among those worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the curve has been flattening for several days now and Conte – during a televised address – urged the Italian people to hold out for only a few more weeks.

“We have extended the restrictive measures until May 3,” he explained.

“A difficult decision, for which I take responsibility. But there are encouraging epidemiological signs with regards to the curve.

“The measures taken by the government are bearing fruit and are working. Italy its also proving to be an example for other countries in its reactionary measures to protect the health of its citizens.

“Precisely for this reason, we cannot thwart the efforts we have made so far. We could throw away the results we have achieved until now.

“The hope is that after May 3, it is possible to start again with caution. We must continue to respect the rules. Even during the [Easter] holidays, we must continue to keep social distances.

“The extension also applies to businesses. From Tuesday April 14, we will reopen bookshops, stationary stores and some similar businesses.”

The announcement also suggests training will be allowed to resume as normal on May 4.
