Paris Saint-Germain were tempted by the prospect of signing Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi, according to the club’s Sporting Director.
The Argentine announced he wanted to leave the Nou Camp this summer but reincinded his decision after Barcelona insisted on any interested club to pay his release clause of about 700m euros.
PSG, Manchester City, Inter and Juventus were all interested and monitored the situation but it never came to light.
“We certainly thought about it. There’s a complicated situation with Financial Fair Play, but when we heard Messi could be on the market… it tempted us.
“We asked ourselves if it really was possible. There are some players who are completely out of the ordinary. The problem now is that all the clubs need to sell before they can buy and PSG are no different. But it’s difficult, because nobody is buying.
“We invested heavily in Mauro Icardi this summer, so need to be a little more creative going forward.”
On the possibility of former Juventus manager Max Allegri to replacing Thomas Tuchel at Paris Saint Germain, he said: “Things are very clear with Tuchel, we talk a great deal,” Leonardo told Canal+.
“He achieved something fantastic, now we are taking time to reflect, but I have never contacted any other coach and that includes Allegri. I can also say we did not sign any players without Tuchel giving it the all-clear.
“There are still 10 months on Tuchel’s contract, there will be time to talk about his future.”
