Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot has mocked reports he is on strike over having his wages cut by £7million as he prepares to return to Italy.
Italian newspaper La Stampa had reported earlier this week that Rabiot was refusing to return to Turin following a disagreement with his club over wage reductions.
But Rabiot, who has been isolating in his homeland of France since the COVID-19 pandemic halted Serie A, responded with Instagram posts as he heads back to Juve.
The first Instagram stories post featured Rabiot looking thoughtful with the message ‘When you realise that it was your last day of… strike’ and two laughing emojis.
He then posted a picture of a medicine bottle with the French words for ‘Newspaper-TV press’ and ‘Do not swallow.’
Rabiot will have to serve a 14-day quarantine upon his arrival in Italy, in line with the country’s procedures to combat the spread of the virus, before being able to return to Juventus training.
La Stampa reported that Rabiot, who only signed for Juventus last summer, had launched a ‘personal strike’ against the club after they cut £7m off his £28m salary as they look to protect their finances during the crisis.
In March, the players agreed to defer four months’ wages, reportedly worth around £80m to the club.
Rabiot’s stance had been advised by his mother Veronique, who acts as his agent, the newspaper said.
The midfielder has only made 11 starts for Maurizio Sarri’s team this season and could well be on his way out of Juventus when the window opens.
Manchester United has been mooted as a possible destination for the Frenchman, while Everton have also been mentioned – which would reunite him with his former PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Rabiot has been maintaining his fitness levels at home in France and posted a video clip of himself running.
