Real Madrid will not host any La Liga games at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium until the end of the season, the president of the club Florentino Perez confirmed on Monday that the 13-time European champions will instead finish the 2019-20 campaign at their training complex.

Football in Spain is set to return but would be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future and Real Madrid remaining home fixtures will take place at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium at Valdebebas.

In a letter to members, Perez confirmed the decision, as he spoke of the financial ramifications and continued impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Perez wrote: “We have made the decision to play in the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium in our Ciudad Real Madrid all the games in which we will play as a local team.

“This decision will allow us to advance in the works of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.”

Real Madrid played their last home game against Barcelona and the Los Blancos won 2-0 in the Clasico in front of am 81,000 capacity crowd.

Bernabeu is undergoing renovation, Perez has confirmed that key work will continue on the ground, including the construction of the new ‘cellar’, where a retractable pitch will be kept while the arena is used for other events such as concerts.

The ‘Nuevo Bernabeu’ had originally been due to be finished in the summer of 2022, and will boast a retractable roof and a range of new leisure spaces.

The Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium is a 6,000-seater venue which usually plays host to Real’s Castilla (youth) team.
