Referee Craig Pawson looked gutted that Alexandre Lacazette’s chance to equalise for Arsenal was saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Lacazette surprised everyone on Monday night by giving Arsenal the lead at Anfield in the first half, but it was his miss, that would have given the Gunners a share of the points, that came as even more of a surprise.

The Frenchman beat the offside trap in the second half to find himself one-on-one with Alisson in the Liverpool goal but the Brazilian closed down the shot quickly and it remained 2-1. Arsenal fans watching at home would have been gutted, maybe as gutted as the referee, who looked pretty disappointed not to see the ball go in the back of the net.

We can only assume that Pawson has the former Lyon forward in his Fantasy Football team, especially as earlier in the night it was Arsenal fans bemoaning the man in black.

The referee had his first piece of action after just two minutes of the game when Sadio Mane looked like he may have purposely elbowed Kieran Trippier.

The Senegal forward fended off the defender with his arm but hit the Scotsman in the face, though the official felt it only worthy of a yellow card.

Lacazette then put Arsenal ahead in the 25th minute, following a mistake from Andrew Robertson, but the lead lasted just three minutes, with Mane typically getting the equaliser.

Pawson was actually praised for his work in the build up to the goal, for playing advantage for Liverpool rather than give a foul.

Robertson made amends for his earlier error by grabbing the second goal for the Premier League champions just six minutes later.

Lacazette’s miss in the second half protected Jurgen Klopp’s side’s 100% start to the new season, with Diogo Jota adding insult to injury with a third of the game for the Reds with just minutes left till full time.
